Rough Creek is THE place to vacation, whether you’re traveling with your family, significant other, extended family, or even your furry friends; their stunning lodgings, delicious food and an endless list of activities means there’s something there for everyone to enjoy. Carve out some time in your schedule for relaxation and bonding with those you care about most, and come see how Rough Creek can make your vacation dreams come true. Here are 11 reasons every Texan NEEDS to visit Rough Creek Lodge and Resort!
- The Lodgings
Rough Creek offers 4 different lodging choices depending on your needs, style, and the size of your party. You can choose to stay:
- In the main lodge
- In one of 4 outdoor cabins
- In the “glamping” accommodations
- In one of the vacation houses
The main lodge is best for parties of 1-6 guests and when staying here you’ll be treated to deep soaking bathtubs and a terrace complete with rocking chairs to enjoy the view.
If you’re traveling with a larger party, consider staying in one of the 4 cabins available for rent. The cabins come complete with a fireplace, screened-in porch and access to a kids’ playground, among other amenities.
Rough Creek’s “Glamping” accommodation takes camping to a whole nother level- stay in their 30 foot Airstream Camper that comfortably sleeps 2 adults and 3 children and experience nature at its core (but without the heat and bugs). The trailer is located in a private setting nestled among trees so you have a private and unobstructed view of the property. It comes with a fully stocked kitchen, a large deck space, a grill, fire pit, swings, and even bicycles.
There are 8 different vacation houses of varying sizes available for rent; each one has its own style and amenities, but all are outfitted so you feel as though you’re staying in the peak of luxury. Regardless of whether you choose the 2 bedrooms “Ford House” or the 5,000 square foot “Owner’s House”, you can be assured they’ll be plenty of room for you and your guests to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
**Pets are welcomed in the cabins for a fee, and pet-sitting services are available for $15 per hour.**
- The Food
Chef Gerard Thompson works hard to make every meal memorable, and memorable is only one of the ways we can describe the amazing food at Rough Creek Lodge. The restaurant’s menu changes daily and features local produce grown specifically for Rough Creek as well as locally-sourced meat. The North American Restaurant Association gave Rough Creek a perfect, 40-point rating and called it “by far the best dining in Texas.” Whether you indulge in the Grilled Texas Quail, the handmade Pheasant Ravioli, or one of their many mouthwatering desserts, you’ll be sure to walk away full and happy.
- The Spa
Rough Creek’s Spa is phenomenal and features treatments for women, men, and youth. They offer multiple variations of massages, facials, and body treatments, including couples massages, anti-aging facials, hand or foot grooming for men and a “sugar and spice” manicure or pedicure for kids.
- The Pool
The pool at Rough Creek Lodge is a haven for both kids and adults; kids will love splashing around in the resort-size pool, floating down the lazy river, and flying down the water slide, while adults can put their feet up in a shaded cabana and enjoy the friendly poolside service.
- The Hunting and Shooting Opportunities
Regardless of whether you’re an expert shooter or a novice, there are plenty of opportunities to hunt and shoot at Rough Creek. The lodge sits on over 11,000 acres of hunting ground rife with ducks, turkeys, deer, hogs, and more. A guest favorite is the Upland hunting experience where you’re sure to be amazed as you watch the professional hunting dogs flush birds with precision. The harvest will include birds such as Quail, Chucker, & Pheasant. Or if objects are more your style, check out the Sporting Clays course or the Wobble Trap. Expert shooters can test their skills at the shooting complex. And don’t worry, all shooting activities are supervised by experienced instructors in order to ensure the safety and fun of everyone involved.
- The Toptracer Range
Golf aficionados will fall in love with Rough Creek’s Toptracer Range. Toptracer uses the same ball-tracking technology you see in the pros. Challenge your friends or family to a game of “longest drive” or “closest to the pin”; Toptracer is fun regardless of your skill level, so it’s a great bonding activity for families.
- The Outdoor Activities
There are SO MANY ways to explore the outdoors at Rough Creek- check out the paintball field, batting cages, the 40-foot rock climbing wall, and/or the 675-foot zipline. Rent a side by side and explore the rugged terrain or up to Gunn Mountain. Reserve a canoe or check out the 9-hole Disc Golf course…the possibilities for outdoor fun truly are endless!
- The Indoor Activities
Although Rough Creek is known for its outdoor activities, there are plenty of things to do inside on rainy days or for those who don’t want to brave the heat! Break a sweat in the 24-hour fitness center, take your turn at the Xbox at Live Oak, or watch a sports game and/or challenge a friend to a game of poker in the Loft! World-renowned chef Gerard Thompson even teaches group cooking lessons- an experience you won’t soon forget!
- The Nature Experience
The grounds of Rough Creek Lodge and Resort are stunning, and you can experience them in a myriad of ways. Take a leisurely stroll along one of their many walking paths, or book a 60 or 90-minute trail ride and see the property via horseback! And if you’d rather have a view of the water, consider one of the guided fishing tours on Mallard Lake. There’s so much to see and do, it will be hard to choose the best way to enjoy the peace and serenity of this beautiful property.
- The Town of Grandbury
Although there are more than enough activities to keep you busy at the Resort, we also recommend venturing into the town of Grandbury for some sight-seeing and fun! Kids will love exploring Dinosaur World and searching for fossils in Dinosaur Valley, and afterward families can take in a movie at the Brazos Drive-In, one of the last drive-in theaters in all of Texas. There’s also the Barnard Street Mill and Art Museum, the historical Glen Rose Square, and family-friendly Oakdale Park. Additionally, Glen Rose is home to Squaw Valley Golf Club, a 36-hole championship course that’s widely known as one of the best in Texas. Lastly, take a 9.5-mile scenic drive at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and visit the petting pasture, nature trails, and the Nature Store and Cafe.
- The Kid-friendly atmosphere
Although Rough Creek is an incredibly upscale resort, they also welcome children and families and have worked hard to provide activities and create a kid-friendly atmosphere. Your kids will love roasting s’mores over their outdoor firepits, flying one of the resort’s complimentary kites, riding along on a private hayride, visiting the animals at the petting corral, or hanging out at the Kid’s Ranch! The Kid’s Ranch has recently been updated and features foosball, air hockey, ping pong, and video games. These are just some of the many activities designed to keep kids entertained while staying at Rough Creek- be sure to check out our other post “Keep Kids Busy at Rough Creek”.
